1950-1998
In 1950, Canadian Overseas Telecommunication Corporation
(COTC) was created as a Canadian Crown corporation. The company proceeded to become an innovative leader in the telecommunications industry, developing the first transatlantic coaxial cable, TAT-1, in 1956 and the first communications satellite, Early Bird, in 1964.
Renamed Teleglobe Canada in 1975, the company has become a recognized global communications leader.

2000
In November 2000, Teleglobe and Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE Inc.) merged to create one of the largest and most advanced communications companies in the world. As a result of this merger, Teleglobe Business Solutions (the U.S. business division of Teleglobe) decided to implement a name change to better reflect the market that it serves and its focus on providing superior customer service. eMeritus Communications

In February 2001, Teleglobe Business Solutions officially changed its name to eMeritus Communications, Inc. and launched several initiatives to deliver superior, personalized customer service to its customer base throughout North America.

In August of 2001, VarTec Telecom, Inc., a private Dallas-based telecommunications provider of local and long distance service, signed an agreement with BCE to acquire Excel Telecommunications and its wholly owned subsidiaries.

2002
On April 6, 2002, VarTec Telecom officially acquired both Excel Telecommunications and eMeritus Communications.!!!!!

Network Features
eMeritus powers the transmission of voice and data over a high-capacity global network. Capacity, quality and speed are extremely vital requirements to business customers - and eMeritus delivers maximum reliability and capacity through its fiber optic network with a state-of-art switching platform. The eMeritus network features 480 POPs throughout United States and extensive connections to International Gateways. Continually expanding to incorporate new technology, this network supports the demands of eMeritus' diverse product portfolio.

Network Reliability And Design
eMeritus’ parent company, VarTec Telecom, is now the largest privately-held communications corporation in the United States, with $1.7 billion in annual revenue and serving a base of nearly five million business and residential customers worldwide. Millions of customers utilize the network daily and enjoy uninterrupted service. In addition to extensive voice services, eMeritus customers use this robust network to promote their e-commerce applications, e-business initiatives, and Internet connectivity needs to grow their customer base and improve employee communications.

Network Reach
The eMeritus network covers the entire continental United States. The domestic network consists of over 480 POP sites with multiple locations in major metropolitan areas. Access lines from a customer site are connected to the nearest POP for interconnection to the network backbone. The network utilizes DS-3 connectivity to every Bell and major independent LEC tandem and operates approximately 200,000 miles of DS-1 route miles and 145,000 miles of DS-3 route miles.

The network also features SS7 signaling to enable fast call set-up and exchange of addressing information between network switches, platforms and nodes. It checks the availability of various routes to the termination trunk group before establishing the actual call.

Network Operations Centers (NOC)
The eMeritus network is supported 24x7 by redundant Network Operations Centers located in Dallas, Texas and Chicago, Illinois. Highly experienced telecommunications professionals with an outstanding track record of proactive response to network issues staff the NOCs.

Major switching hubs are located throughout the United States in: Atlanta, Boston, Chattanooga, Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Sacramento, Washington DC and Orlando and Cleveland in the near future. In Canada, switching nodes are located in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
