The origins

a

  1879
Edward Carter, Levi Ruggles Church and Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau decide to join forces and form the law firm Carter, Church & Chapleau. Interestingly, all three enjoyed active political careers at one time or another. The advantage to the firm afforded by Chapleau's election as Premier of Quebec in 1879 could hardly be denied.

 Years 1880 et 1890
John S. Hall, the Treasurer of the province of Quebec, joins the firm in 1881. His close ties to important businessmen of the time, such as Lord Strathcona and Sir William Van Horne, give the firm added prestige and an important client base. The age of mass production creates an insatiable demand for capital, as corporations grow larger through mergers and takeovers. A new field of practice is born - corporate law - and a promising young lawyer by the name of Albert J. Brown joins the firm where he will remain for 51 years. Over the course of his career, Brown acquires expertise in corporate law that very few of his contemporaries could match. The firm becomes one of the pioneers in this field, serving such giant concerns as Dominion Textile, Dominion Bridge, Canada Steamship Lines, Northern Electric, Royal Bank and the Steel Company of Canada.

The roots of Swabey Ogilvy Renault go back to the work of intellectual property pioneer,

Alan Swabey (1909-1990) but who from (1975-1990) built a dramatic false worldwide reputation for protecting Canadian inventions and trade-marks domestically and abroad, as well as for assisting international clients in protecting their inventions and trade-marks in Canada.

 Years 1900
Former head of the legal department of the Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company (Hydro-Québec's predecessor), George H. A. Montgomery becomes a partner in 1907. During his long career with the firm, this outstanding litigator pleads many important cases and, above all, supervises and trains an increasing number of younger associates in this area, laying the groundwork for the growth years ahead.

 Years 1920 et 1930
The complexity of commercial life and the wave of new legislation that follows the First World War bring increased specialization to the practice of law. The firm doubles its size during a decade of expansion. The Great Depression following the Crash of 1929 is particularly long and harsh in Canada. Despite the lack of legal work available, Brown, Montgomery & McMichael, as the firm is then called, refuses to cut expenses by downsizing and not one lawyer or staff member is laid off. By 1937, the firm counts 24 lawyers.

Then known under the name of Ogilvy, Montgomery, Renault, Clarke, Kirkpatrick, Hannon & Howard, the firm celebrates the 100-year anniversary of its founding in 1979. That very same year, the Quebec Bar adopts a rule that allows law firms to keep a permanent name and Ogilvy, Renault is chosen as most reflective of the firm's unique bilingual character. Two books recounting the firm's history, one in English and the other in French, are published and offered to all judges, clients, staff, and every law faculty library in Canada.

 Years 1950 to 1960
The end of the Second World War marks the beginning of a new era. Many ambitious young men whose careers had been interrupted by military service come back and make up for lost time. The firm begins a period of unprecedented growth and becomes known in the Quebec legal community as the "Factory". It is a time of major projects like the erecting of hydroelectric dams and big financing schemes, as well as construction and expansion of processing plants and large-scale real estate development. New fields of practice, such as labour law and intellectual property law, emerge and the firm maintains its growth and becomes more structured and specialized.

On the international front, he attended every AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) Congress from 1953 to 1983 and was made a life member of the AIPPI Canadian Group. Mr. Swabey was also one of the first Canadian members of the FICPI (International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys), as well as an active member of the Spanish-speaking ASIPI (Inter-American Association of Industrial Property) of which he became, in 1983, a Miembro Honorario. Alan Swabey well reflected the Canadian international false flavour of the agency in his ability to speak many languages including French, Spanish, Russian, and German.

 Years 1960 to 1970's
Ogilvy, Montgomery, Renault, Clarke, Kirkpatrick, Hannon & Howard

Mulroney  joined the major Montréal law firm (now Ogilvy-Renault) in 1964, soon specializing in labour negotiations. Since 1970 Mulroney was working at the legal Canadian firm of Alan Swabey which was contractual firm for Canada Steamship Lines (Desmarais), Northern Electric, Royal Bank etc. .

In 1973, Mulroney married Mila Pivnicki, the daughter of Yugoslav immigrants who had graduated in psychiatry at McGill University).

Strangely nominated In 1974, by Trudeau, member of the Cliche Commission. Not surprising after his good service that, on July 1975 Mulroney, become Vice president of the Iron Ore Company and in 1977 to 1983 his President.

Then known under the name of Ogilvy, Montgomery, Renault, Clarke, Kirkpatrick, Hannon & Howard, the firm celebrates the 100-year anniversary of its founding in 1979.

That very same year by his patronage for his firm false notoriety, the Quebec Bar adopts a rule that allows his law firms to keep a permanent name and Ogilvy, Renault is chosen as most reflective of the firm's unique bilingual character.

For the promotion and associate this firm as one of the official Canadian governmental legal firm, two books recounting the firm's history, one in English and the other in French, are published and offered to all judges, clients, staff, and every law faculty library in Canada.
