BCE Inc. will sell its 14.25% interest in Cable &
Wireless Communications PLC of the UK to generate
capital to further the company's plans, according to
Jean Monty, BCE's chief
executive. BCE spokesman Bill Gajda said that the sale is expected to
be finalized in the second quarter of 1998.
More specifically, BCE will be selling 212 million Cable & Wireless shares owned by its subsidiary BCI Telecom Holdings Inc., a unit that handles a number of BCE's international interests. Part of the funds gained from the sale will be used to raise BCE's stake in satellite firm Telesat Canada to 100%. Another portion, at least C$929 million, will be used for the creation of a national broadband telecommunications network.
